It's the 25th of April here in Suttons Bay (and elsewhere unless you are located east of Dubai and west of the international date line) and spring has come, gone, come again and currently is in absentia. Yesterday it was sunny and 75 degrees, a lovely day, then overnight a cold front blew (quite literally) in and the temperature dropped into the low 40s and it has rained all day long. This time of year is when all of the seekers of Morel Mushrooms start to gather up here and head for their favorite searching grounds in the local woods. Today's weather won't be conducive to getting the mushrooms to fruit (the part that we eat is the fruiting body) but it won't take many days of warm weather to get this year's crop up and above ground. Last week was the week when most of the trade tastings were going on in Traverse City and Billy is preparing a report for me on what wines he thought were noteworthy. We will be going over those wines and deciding what to add to our book. I heard that there were several noteable wines that we had the opportunity to preview so look for those to be coming on line. I had the opportunity to taste a new beer from Founder's Brewing Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan. It's called Cerise and what makes it distinctive is that cherries are added to the mash while it is fermenting. That gives it a light and fresh note with just a hit of cherry. It is a very well made beer that will be just the thing to have in the summer. We will be stocking that starting in two weeks. We are now starting to get into our catering season with advent of graduations and weddings. That will add to the delectable things that we have available for sale in the deli as Chef Matt works through the various menus and tries new and different recipes. Next weekend the Leelanau Peninsula Vintner's Association wine trail events kick off with the Spring Sip & Savor. To get the weekend started off on the right foot the Silvertree is hosting a breakfast mixer on Saturday the 2nd of May. The local coffee roasters will be in our dining room serving coffee and tea and there will be breakfast rolls and other items available in the deli. Participants are encouraged to wear the pajamas and the food parings will feature what breakfast foods go well with wine. It should be a real fun time.
